In November 2013 and May 2014, a team of Darwin-project staff, consultants and students from Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech visited the meadows, high valley slopes and rocky plateaus of the Imegdale and Ait M’hamet communes to collect plant specimens. This is part of the effort to understand the changes in abundance, distribution and harvest of the species of medicinal roots at the centre of the project; and to understand changes in overall plant diversity of communal lands, forest domains and protected areas in these two areas. This periodic collection supports the more systematic floristic and ecological studies carried out by Ahmed Ouhammou of the Cadi Ayyad University in the project’s second year, which will help constitute the baseline against which the project’s long-term success can be measured.
